Collapsible rigid boxes explained
How hinged walls let a rigid box ship flat, what it saves on freight and who it suits. This guide covers how it works, why it matters for freight and what it costs. It is written by our packaging team, drawing on 15+ years of designing and printing boxes.

A collapsible rigid box looks and feels like a fixed rigid box when it reaches your customer. The difference is how it travels: flat.
How it works
A fixed rigid box is built as one solid shape. Its walls are glued to the base, so it can only ship assembled.
In a collapsible rigid box, the walls are hinged to the base. They fold flat for shipping and storage. To assemble, you lift the walls and they lock upright, usually held by the magnetic lid or by small magnets in the walls. No glue and no tools.
Why it matters for freight
Freight is charged on volume as well as weight. An assembled rigid box is mostly air, so a carton fills up long before it gets heavy. Flat boxes stack tightly, so many more fit in each carton.
That means fewer cartons for the same order, which lowers air and sea freight, and less warehouse space once they arrive. You can try the comparison on our collapsible boxes page; the figures there are examples, and we calculate yours with each quote.
What it costs
A collapsible box takes a little more work to make than a fixed one, so the unit price can be slightly higher. For brands shipping overseas, the freight saving often outweighs it. We quote both options side by side so you can compare the full delivered cost.
Who it suits
- Brands shipping internationally, especially by air.
- Brands storing stock in a 3PL, where space is charged by volume.
- Seasonal or launch packaging that is stored for months before use.
If your boxes ship short distances and are packed straight away, a fixed rigid box may be simpler.
Finishes and options
Collapsible boxes take the same finishes as fixed rigid boxes: foil stamping, embossing, spot UV, soft-touch and printed wraps. Inserts are packed separately and dropped in after assembly.
Minimums and approval
Collapsible rigid boxes start at 500 per design, the same as our other rigid boxes. You approve a digital proof and 3D mockup first, and we share production photos before dispatch. See the collapsible rigid box for full specs, or get a quote.
